Gartner publishes Magic Quadrant for Digital Experience Platforms1
Analysts also covered SDL in Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for Digital Experience Platforms.1 In this research, Gartner evaluates 21 Digital Experience Platform (or DXP) vendors in the market, including SDL, based on completeness of vision and ability to execute.
We view that clearly there are two distinct ideologies: the DXP suite versus the best of-breed approach. If we were to plot SDL on the spectrum between suite and best-of-breed, we do lean towards the latter even though we cover a broad spectrum of DX capabilities. Our strategy revolves around integrations to what we believe are other best-of-breed platforms, aligning with what we see most enterprise clients are doing, and providing sophisticated technological capabilities in the platform to do so.
In the Forecast Snapshot: Digital Experience Platforms, Worldwide, 20172, published in November of 2017, Gartner states that three of the seven common inhibitors to spending on external DXP application software include the following:
- “A combination of required capabilities — DXP’s lack appeal for organizations that favor a best-of-breed approach and are concerned about vendor lock-in." 2
- “A desire to be in control of their most strategic technology assets — This is more often seen among organizations transforming to digital business as a core business asset and a central backbone of their new digital operating model. They may be looking to insource back from current providers or to invest in their own development to diversify their supplier strategy." 2
- “High exit barriers for existing solutions." 2
Additionally, we have seen blog posts from industry analysts who suggest that a DXP is merely an aggregation of tool sets; furthermore, DX is a strategy and approach, and no single platform or vendor can get you to where you need to be.
We’re proud to be included in the Magic Quadrant since we feel it’s a recognition of the broad set of capabilities our SDL Tridion DX solution offers.
And a final point to make on Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for Digital Experience Platforms1, we believe that a key technology trend will disrupt the industry. According to Gartner, “As in other markets, AI and machine learning are sources of innovation and inspiration. Organizations will increasingly use AI to address problems with established portal and WCM platforms, such as with the generation of content. AI will enable the creation of personalized contextual experiences without manual rules, offer recommendations and guidance, and enable new means of interaction, such as via chat bots."1
We know that Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning are some of the latest buzzwords to be brought back into the industry, but here at SDL, we aim to ensure practical use of machine learning capabilities to benefit business impact, which will be accomplished from our extensive expertise in machine translation and natural language processing technologies. With the introduction of SDL’s artificial intelligence platform, Hai, SDL Tridion DX is positioned to take content creation, translation and delivery to the next level.
Looking ahead to other upcoming analyst research
With two analyst evaluations of SDL so far in 2018, we look ahead to the next research pieces.
We know that Digital Clarity Group (DCG) is planning a publication on Digital Experience Platforms research which aims to prove the pros and cons of a suite-play versus best-of-breed. DCG plans to conduct their research by fielding a quantitative survey of hundreds of actual buyers of Digital Experience solutions and not just relying on vendor information and a few qualitative client interviews. We are excited to learn what results this research brings in to learn more about DX technology buying preferences. We’ll keep you posted once the report is published.
