Someone I follow on Twitter tweeted information about a blog entry called “How to get rid of bad translation choices” http://blog.albatrossolutions.com/  and as this post was written by Gabriella Ascari, an Italian translator, and as it had an example in Italian, I could easily empathize with it.

Any translation department  or freelancer is faced with this issue: it is not necessarily a “wrong” translation but the style is not quite there, the word choice could have been better, when you read the sentence it does not sound too good to your ear…what to do about it?

I've been a little late to the party on this one, but I've been paying close attention to the recent furore surrounding Google's new as-you-type search results technology. It raised the whole discussion among the online marketing gliterati of how SEO would be transformed, with many suggesting that companies would now bid on single letter search terms. An interesting concept which could make not only a single word, but also an individual letter a valuable commodity. After typing in our own company name, 'SDL', to test out how Google Instant works, I wondered what this would mean for the humble acronym? IMHO acronyms could now play a more important role in online content.

Barbara Inge Karsch shares her experiences, opinions and general 'guru' knowledge on terminology management. After working in various terminology management positions at JD Edwards and Microsoft, Barbara now runs her own terminology consultancy.

[TOM] Hi Barbara, thanks for talking with us on the SDL blog. So, we’re talking about terminology management today and you’ve got some pretty extensive experience in this field, what’s your background?

While travelling through Heathrow airport recently, I was fascinated to see in live action the much-talked-about full-body scanners which are increasingly being deployed in many countries. These controversial devices are viewed as a blessing by proponents who point out that they are more secure, quicker, and don’t require people to be touched. Opponents on the other hand point to the potential violation of human rights through the virtual images that are created and the unknown long-term affects on health. The passengers on the whole seemed outwardly unperturbed by the virtual strip search - or perhaps they were only too aware of the consequences of non-compliance.

I've been enjoying the posts on BIK Terminology recently and a post on 'how to identify a term' got me thinking about how to make a shameless, tenuous link between the World Cup and terminology. So, here goes.

I confess to being a full-blown football (sorry, soccer) fanatic as well as harbouring a love for language, so the phenomenon of the Vuvuzela is fascinating to me. Others with sensitive ears may disagree. But regardless of the sound it makes, I wonder whether the Vuvuzela would be such a talking point if it didn't have its distinctive, onomatopoeic name. Would it be the memorable icon of the world cup if it was just called a 'horn'? I don't think so.

With the immediacy of tweets and blogs and general online opinions, we sometimes forget the ‘old-school’ book is still probably the most reliable fountain of knowledge out there. Although it doesn’t have the snappy, attention-grabbing title a blog post may need, ‘The Elements of Technical Writing’ by Gary Blake and Robert W. Bly still rings true in its core message for good technical communication. Despite the fact it was written 17 years ago, before DITA, Component Content Management, Dynamic Publishing, Global Authoring and the like, we can still learn a lot from its 10 fundamental rules for good technical writing:

1. Technically accurate
2. Useful
3. Concise
4. Complete
5. Clear
6. Consistent
7. Correct in spelling, punctuation and grammar
8. Targeted
9. Well organized
10. Interesting

Tom Smith, Product Marketing Executive writes: At the University of Vienna this week, the gurus of terminology management convened en force to present to, discuss with and teach a diverse audience about the intricacies of terminology management at the Terminology Summer School event. More of an academic course than a conference, this event provided students, translators, terminologists and the like with detailed insight into subjects such as the elusive ROI of terminology management, industry standards for terminology and an overview of the tools available.
