SDL would like to offer our condolences to Mike’s family and recognises his contribution to the language industry. Mike McMahon led Cross Language and made a major contribution to the industry.
Today at SDL we have announced the acquisition of Language Weaver. This is a very strategic and important move for SDL and Language Weaver. The internet is generating more and more content that needs to be managed, optimized and translated. And yet, most companies still translate less than 50% of their overall content. Most of the content on the web is still in English – probably about 80% and yet this will change and only 20% will be in English in a few years’ time.
CEO Mark Lancaster writes: Global customers who have grown up on the Internet are bringing new expectations to their consumption of technical information. When wanting to replace an ink cartridge in a printer or pair a Bluetooth® headset with their new phone, they don’t want to turn to a manual in the box or even a static PDF. They go to the Internet or their Smartphone to find just the right technical information: information that is graphically rich (“Show me how!”), personalized to their problem (“Don’t show me a feature that is not in my product.”), just in time (“Don’t give me everything!”), and up-to-date (“Why can’t I find the latest up-to-date information?”).
SDL CEO Mark Lancaster presented the keynote last month at the Innovate conference in San Francisco. Below you’ll find a recording of that presentation – we’ve cut it into bite sized chunks so that you can easily browse through the different topics he covered:
Innovation and the history of SDL
In this section Mark tells the story of SDL - how he managed to get investment and how SDL grew the business from a couple of people in an office in Maidenhead to 2000 people around the world.
