SDL is looking forward to exhibiting at the 2012 Department of Defense Intelligence Information Systems (DoDIIS) Worldwide Conference from April 1-4 in Denver, Colorado.

At the event, we’ll showcase translation solutions trusted by defense and intelligence organizations to quickly translation information for mission critical decision making. We will also show products that help linguists translate information more efficiently to communicate with citizens across languages or translate foreign language data into English.

Hosted annually, the conference's 2012 theme, Advancing Mission Integration, will highlight the Chief Information Officer’s commitment and intent to unify defense intelligence infrastructure and information sharing initiatives.

The conference hosts a wide-range of government, civilian, military and industry partners interested in networking, collaborating and bringing new resourceful solutions to the industry. SDL is excited to announce that our Chief Scientific Officer, Daniel Marcu, will be sharing his vision for automated translation at the TAUS Asia Summit in Tokyo and Beijing.

In this session, Daniel will talk about what is required to transition MT from a component into an ecosystem - one where MT is touched by numerous products and platforms and becomes an integral part of each and every communication.

Am 16.02.2012 fand die 1. SDL-Übersetzerkonferenz in Zusammenarbeit mit dem BDÜ Landesverband Baden-Württemberg statt. Wir haben aufgrund der großen Anwenderzahlen von SDL Trados-Produkten nicht zuletzt im BDÜ den ersten Versuch auf regionaler Ebene gestartet, um nicht gleich alle Rahmen zu sprengen. Dass die Veranstaltung bereits nach drei Wochen ausgebucht war und eine Warteliste eingeführt werden musste, bestätigt diesen Ansatz, ist aber nicht zuletzt auch der Zusammenarbeit mit dem BDÜ Landesverband Baden-Württemberg und den Referenten geschuldet, die uns sowohl bei der inhaltlichen Gestaltung als bei der Organisation tatkräftig zur Seite gestanden haben.

Und es hat sich gelohnt. Die Teilnehmer/innen lobten ausdrücklich die Kooperation, bei der sie voll auf ihre Kosten gekommen seien. Nebenbei bemerkt: Die Kooperation hat auch uns Spaß gemacht. Aus SDL-Sicht steht dem Schritt aufs bundesweite Parkett also nichts im Weg.

Mir als Übersetzer (meinen Abschluss habe ich 1994 in Saarbrücken gemacht) hat es sehr viel Spaß gemacht, vor einer Schar freiberuflicher Übersetzer zu stehen, die mir und meinen Kollegen Löcher in den Bauch gefragt haben und (hoffentlich) folgendes festgestellt haben: „Mein“ Produkt SDL Trados Studio ist nichts, wovor man sich fürchten muss.

Besonders gefreut hat meine Kollegen und mich, dass wir in den Tagen nach der Konferenz zahlreiche nette E-Mails wie diese bekommen haben:

… vielen Dank für die inspirierende SDL-Konferenz gestern! Das Programm war dicht, ergiebig, gut organisiert und hat sicherlich vielen Kolleginnen und Kollegen wirklich etwas gebracht - mir auf jeden Fall. Im Übrigen ist es auch angenehm, einmal die Personen hinter den Namen zu erleben, denen man sonst nur virtuell begegnet.

… vielen Dank für die interessante Veranstaltung heute. Das war ein tolles Angebot. Und dann erfreulicherweise auch noch mehr oder weniger vor der Haustür.

One of the readers of my previous blog on Java Localization mentioned that the apostrophe (a “single quote” character) is also a very special character in a Java string and just today I got a support case dealing with exactly this issue. The question of our customer is why a single apostrophe that is entered into a string translation in SDL Passolo is written to the target Java property file as two apostrophes. Let me try to explain.

Have you noticed that the way people work has changed over the past decade?
