Over the last couple of years we’ve heard a lot about the merits (and in some cases not) of crowdsourcing translation for community, user generated and non-vital web content .

Social media sites such as Facebook and Linked-in have embraced this method for translating their sites into multiple languages to increase their global reach.  But the issue has always been the level of commitment required from volunteers to translate large amounts of content and the resulting accuracy of the translation. 

The latest innovations in Machine Translation (MT) must surely cast shadow on the time/cost/effort ratio of using crowdsourcing.  Why go to the trouble of relying on volunteers to translate content when sophisticated, customized Machine Translation applications such as SDL’s recently launched BeGlobal can do it in a fraction of the time and effort?

With Back to the Future's 25th Anniversary re-screening sadly behind us now, I was sitting at the weekend streaming a movie over my Internet-enabled TV, while renewing my subscription fee at the same time. Apple emailed me the weekend before asking if I wanted to renew my Apple Care contract, to which of course I capitulated. As my wife renewed her season pass for the Vampire Diaries, it hit me: In this world of modern technology that is on the brink of another bubble of significant innovation... do we actually own anything?

Last week, I was fortunate to attend the excellent GALA conference in Prague, Czech Republic, where I also had the privilege to present my ideas on technical communication and global authoring best practices for localization and machine translation. You can view my presentation slides below:

What is crowdsourcing all about and how might it affect the translation industry? Crowdsourcing lets the users or “the crowd” create a solution and impact the way that a business runs. This can involve giving feedback into a product, or in the translation industry it can mean that users, translators or the crowd might translate content.
