Overwhelming Response to SDL OpenExchange Brings Record Downloads and Developer Participation

To mark 6th month anniversary of SDL OpenExchange, SDL launches competition to inspire innovation and extend SDL Trados Studio experience

SDL, (LSE:SDL) the leading provider of Global Information Management  solutions, has announced today a surge in usage of its innovative  SDL OpenExchange™.  SDL OpenExchange provides a unique, open industry platform which enables developers to extend and customize the capabilities of industry-leading products such as SDL Trados® Studio. It also acts as a web portal for developing, marketing and selling applications and plug-ins that leverage the open architecture of SDL’s language technology products. Only six months after its full launch, SDL OpenExchange has received over 15,000 application downloads and now has over 200 developers signed-up to the program. Some of the most popular apps listed include SDL XLIFF Converter, the MyMemory plug-in from Translated Srl and the ARCO lookup tool.

To mark this moment and further support developer creativity benefitting the entire localization industry, SDL is launching a Developer Competition. The competition will provide €10,000 (or local equivalent) to the winning developers who build the most popular applications (apps) for SDL Trados Studio , the world’s leading translation memory software. The competition is designed to spark further innovation amongst the SDL OpenExchange developer community.

"There are already many very interesting apps for SDL Trados Studio users, but we believe that some of the best applications are yet to come from our developer community," said Daniel Brockmann, Director of Product Management for SDL Language Technologies division. "We'd like to reward innovative 3rd party developers and help them raise their commercial profile in the industry, as much as possible."

"We are very happy with our industry’s developer support to date and pleased to celebrate with this compelling challenge for developers to stretch their imagination and skills to leverage the full capabilities of the SDL Trados Studio Software Development Kit (SDK) and to create amazing new applications," said Mark Tapling, CEO of SDL Language Technologies division.

There will be two main competition categories to enter: paid applications and free applications, with a prize pot of €5,000 each. In order to win the top prizes in the SDL OpenExchange Developer competition, apps will need to receive the highest number of downloads as well as positive reviews by the SDL user community, between September 1st and December 30th. The competition is open to all developers, including those who have already signed up to SDL OpenExchange, as well as new developers, who enter to take part in this competition.

Specifically, for developers new to SDL OpenExchange, the steps to take part are:
1. Sign up to join as an SDL OpenExchange Developer and download the SDK at: www.sdl.com/openexchange
2. Build a great app and submit your application on the SDL OpenExchange website
3.For the best chances we recommend submitting your app by September 30th, 2011.

The competition will run until the end of December 2011 giving users ample opportunity to download their favourite apps. The winners will be announced in early January 2012.

Awesome idea!
What would be very helpful is if SDL and other could also publish the source code for the projects. Of course voluntary. But this would heat up the program again. Personally, I would love to get the source code for the SDL XLIFF Converter.
