How "Apps" Conquer the World of SDL Trados Studio and Co.
by Klaus Fleischmann, Kaleidoscope
"Apps" – they surely are creating a constant buzz ever since the iPhone and the Android-based smartphones have started to conquer the world of mobile communication. Almost everybody talks about these "little" software extensions that perform many useful things for us.
Even picking the right apps is easy since other users already have reviewed and commented on many of the applications. Therefore, and because SDL has tested all available applications for their functionality and compatibility, you take no risks at all.
Openness as a prerequisite
Kaleidoscope is also taking part in this OpenExchange initiative. As a reseller, we know the strengths and weaknesses of the SDL products. What has always impressed us especially as a software manufacturer, is the fundamental openness of the system architecture of SDL Trados Studio. This starts with the available and documented API of SDL Trados Studio or SDL MultiTerm and ends with the commitment of SDL to open formats like TMX, TBX or recently with SDLXLIFF also to the XLIFF standard. Thus, our solutions can connect perfectly to the SDL products and subsequently make the daily routine of many translators, project managers, reviewers and terminologists easier and more efficient.
In addition to commercial vendors such as Kaleidoscope, there is also a very active developer "community", offering extremely useful extensions, such as T-Window for Clipboard (http://www.sdl.com/en/language-technology/sdl-openexchange/AppDetails.aspx?appid=67). It is worthwhile to stop by regularly on the website of SDL OpenExchange. Then maybe just the add-on for which you have waited so long is available!
Kaleidoscope solutions on SDL OpenExchange
Excelling MultiTerm and Publishing MultiTerm are our first two solutions on SDL OpenExchange. We, however, are already developing new useful extensions in order to make your workday even more efficient. So check back regularly!
